Pergolas in Perth cost from about $9,500 to $11,000 for a 6 × 4.5 m open timber pergola to about $28,000 to $33,000 for an adjustable louvre roof. Fixed aluminium slat pergolas and freestanding pavilions sit in between.

In Perth, a structure with a solid Colorbond roof is almost always called a patio. This page covers the open and opening roofs: louvres, slats, timber and pavilions. For solid roofs, see our Perth patios page.

Perth prices are among the lowest in the country for the same structure. What moves your quote is mostly the site: sandy soil and footing design, the height of your fascia, and whether the pergola needs a building permit. Motors, rain sensors and lighting add to the cost of a louvre roof. Our louvre roof cost guide breaks those extras down.

What the Perth climate asks of a pergola

Perth is a city of long, dry, very bright summers and wet winters. The Bureau of Meteorology's Perth Airport records show it plainly:

Perth Airport (BOM) Summer Year
Mean max temperature 31.9 °C (Jan), 32.1 °C (Feb) 24.7 °C
Days of 35 °C or more 9.1 in Jan 28.8 a year
Mean daily sunshine 11.6 hours (Dec and Jan) 8.8 hours
Days with 1 mm of rain or more 1.4 in Jan 84.6 a year
Mean 3pm wind speed 22.7 km/h (Dec) 18.7 km/h

Two things follow. In summer, you need serious shade, not rain cover: January averages just 1.4 rain days. In June and July, the same backyard averages 13.6 and 14.8 rain days. An open roof is a fair-weather space for half the year.

The afternoon wind matters too. December's mean 3pm wind of 22.7 km/h is the highest of any month at the airport. Shade cloth and loose screens take a beating, so solid slats or blades last better.

Which pergola styles suit Perth?

Adjustable louvre pergola

A louvre roof answers both seasons. Angle the blades against the summer sun, then close them when winter rain comes in. It is the priciest option, at about $28,000 to $33,000 for 6 × 4.5 m.

Fixed aluminium slat pergola

A slat pergola is the low-upkeep choice for Perth sun. Powder-coated aluminium needs no oiling, and the angled slats cut direct sun through the hottest part of the day. It will not keep the winter rain off.

Open timber pergola

Timber is the most affordable pergola at about $9,500 to $11,000. Under 11.6 hours of summer sun a day, plan on regular oiling or staining. WoodSolutions rates H3 treated timber for outside, above-ground use; posts set in the ground need H5 or a Class 1 durable hardwood.

Pyramid roof pavilion

A freestanding pavilion suits a pool, a spa or an outdoor kitchen down the back of a typical single-storey brick and tile home. It has a solid roof, so councils usually treat it like a patio for approvals.

Do you need council approval for a pergola in Perth?

Perth has many local councils, and their wording differs. The common thresholds are 20 m² of area and 2.4 m of height. The City of Belmont exempts a pergola from a building permit only if it is under 20 m² and no higher than 2.4 m. The City of Cockburn requires a permit above either limit.

Approval in Western Australia, in short

In WA most patios need a building permit. Only a small freestanding patio (10 m2 or less and 2.4 m high or less) or an open pergola (20 m2 or less and 2.4 m high or less) can skip it, and neither exemption applies in cyclonic wind regions C or D. An attached patio always needs a permit. Planning (development) approval is usually not needed for a single house if the patio meets the R-Codes deemed-to-comply rules, but it is needed in the front setback, on heritage places, on strata lots in some councils, or when the design departs from the R-Codes. Most patio companies lodge the building permit for you.

Read the Western Australia approval guide. Your installer usually handles the paperwork.

The louvre roof is where Perth councils really differ:

  • City of Belmont: its pergola definition includes "operable louvered roofing", so a louvre roof follows pergola rules.
  • City of Joondalup: a louvred roof is treated like a patio. It needs no permit only if it is standalone, 10 m² or less and no higher than 2.4 m. A standalone louvre roof must also sit 900 mm from side and rear boundaries and from the house.
  • City of Canning: a pergola needs planning approval only in the front setback area. Its covering is limited to battens, open lattice or shade cloth.

So the same louvre roof can be an easy pergola in one suburb and a patio-style application in the next. Our WA council approval guide explains the process step by step.

Things specific to building a pergola in Perth

  • Boundaries: Joondalup allows a pergola on the boundary. It must not touch dividing fences or a neighbour's parapet wall, and footings must stay on your land.
  • Adding a roof later: Cockburn defines a patio as a pergola with an impervious roof, such as Colorbond or polycarbonate. Roofing your pergola later changes the approval.
  • Bushfire areas: in the hills suburbs, ask your installer whether your block is mapped as bushfire prone before you choose timber.
  • Estates: many newer estates have their own design guidelines. Check them before you pick a colour or a height.

How Backyard Mate works for a Perth pergola

We are not a builder and we do not install anything. Here is how it works:

  1. Upload one photo of your backyard and pick louvre, slat, timber or pavilion.
  2. In about 30 seconds you see that pergola on your own house, with an indicative WA price.
  3. If you want a quote, one local installer who services your suburb calls you. Only one, and only if you ask.

It is a quick way to see whether slats or a louvre roof suit your home before anyone visits. For a broader comparison, read our pergola cost guide.

Common questions

How much does a pergola cost in Perth?

A 6 × 4.5 m open timber pergola in Perth is about $9,500 to $11,000. Aluminium slats are about $13,000 to $15,500, and a louvre roof about $28,000 to $33,000. These are indicative installed ranges; a site measure sets the real price.

Do I need a building permit for a pergola in Perth?

Often, yes. The City of Belmont and the City of Cockburn both exempt pergolas only under 20 m² and up to 2.4 m high. A 6 × 4.5 m pergola is 27 m², so it would need a permit there.

Is a louvre roof a pergola or a patio in Perth?

It depends on the council. The City of Belmont includes operable louvred roofing in its pergola definition. The City of Joondalup treats a louvred roof separately, with tighter permit limits. Check your own council before you order.

What is the best pergola for Perth summers?

For pure shade, a fixed aluminium slat pergola blocks a good share of direct sun with no oiling. If you also want rain cover in winter, an adjustable louvre roof can close. Timber works well but needs regular coating in strong sun.

Can a pergola go on the boundary in Perth?

The City of Joondalup says a pergola can sit on the boundary. It must not touch dividing fences or neighbouring parapet walls, and all footings must stay within your property. Rules differ between councils, so check yours.
