A louvre roof pergola has a roof of aluminium blades that rotate on a motor or a hand crank. Open them for sun and breeze, or close them for shade and rain cover. It is the most flexible outdoor roof you can choose, and the most expensive of the common patio and pergola styles.

What is a louvre roof pergola made of?

An opening roof pergola has three main parts: an aluminium frame, a row of rotating aluminium blades, and a drive that turns them.

The blades are powder coated aluminium. When closed, they interlock to form a ceiling-like surface, and many carry a weather strip along the edge.

The frame is a set of posts and perimeter beams. On most systems the beams double as gutters. Water runs off the closed blades into a channel at each end, into the gutter in the frame, then out through a downpipe.

Drainage is designed in from the start. One louvre maker sets its blades at a minimum fall of 1 degree (17 mm per metre). Its frame gutters need at least 3 mm of fall per metre.

Like a patio, a louvre roof can be attached to the house or built freestanding over a pool deck or garden.

Motorised vs manual louvre roofs

Most opening roofs sold today are motorised. A low-voltage motor or linear actuator turns the blades, and you control it with a remote.

Manual systems use a crank handle. They cost less and need no wiring, but someone has to be home to close them when the weather turns.

Some makers also offer a solar powered drive. That can avoid running mains power out to the pergola.

Rain sensors

A rain sensor mounts on the frame and tells the motor to close the blades when rain starts. It only works on motorised systems. If you leave home with the roof open, it protects your outdoor furniture and cushions.

Pros and cons of an adjustable louvre pergola

Pros:

  • Sun in winter, shade in summer and cover when it rains.
  • Part-open blades let hot air escape while blocking direct sun.
  • Aluminium will not rot, warp or attract termites.
  • Gutters hide inside the frame, so the lines stay clean.
  • Easy to add lighting, heaters and outdoor blinds.

Cons:

  • The most expensive patio or pergola style by a wide margin.
  • Motors, sensors and seals need occasional servicing.
  • Blade spans are limited, so wide areas need extra beams. One maker's manual lists maximum blade spans of about 3.3 m to 5 m.
  • Leaves and debris need clearing from blade channels and gutters.

Who is a louvre roof best for?

A louvre roof suits owners who want one outdoor room that works in every season. It earns its keep in southern cities, where you want winter sun on cold days and shade in January.

It also suits:

  • Homes where a solid patio would darken the living room.
  • Pool areas, where you want sun at midday and shade later.
  • Outdoor kitchens and dining areas used most nights.
  • Owners staying long term who want a premium finish.

If the budget is tight, a fixed slat pergola or a polycarbonate patio gives some of the same feel for much less.

Louvre roof cost moves with size, blade span, the motor and sensors, height, footings and electrical work. Attaching to a double-storey wall or adding blinds also adds to it. These ranges are indicative only, and a site measure and written quote from an installer sets the real price. Our louvre roof cost guide breaks it down further.

Colours and options

Frames and blades are powder coated. Makers offer a range of exterior colours, and some offer woodgrain finishes for a timber look. Many owners match the frame to their house gutters or window frames.

Popular options:

  • Rain sensor (motorised systems only).
  • LED lighting built into the beams.
  • Outdoor strip heaters for winter nights.
  • Outdoor blinds or fixed screens on the windy side.
  • A solar powered drive on some systems.

Plan electrical work early, so cables run neatly inside the frame.

Do you need council approval for a louvre roof pergola?

Often, yes. Because the blades close into a roof, an opening roof may not be treated like an open pergola. Size, height, boundary setbacks and bushfire rating all matter too.

Some small structures are exempt in some states. Read our council approval guide for patios and pergolas before you commit.

Louvre roof pergola vs similar styles

Louvre roof vs fixed aluminium slat pergola

A fixed slat pergola looks similar, but the blades do not move or close. It gives filtered shade for about half the price, with no rain cover.

Louvre roof vs insulated patio

An insulated patio gives permanent shade and rain cover with a cool, finished ceiling. It costs far less, but you lose the option of open sky.

Common questions

How much does a louvre roof pergola cost?

Our indicative installed price for a 6 m × 4.5 m adjustable louvre pergola is $28,000 to $33,000 in WA and $32,000 to $37,500 in NSW, including GST. The motor, sensors, lighting, height and footings move the final quote.

Are louvre roofs waterproof when closed?

They are designed to shed rain when the blades are closed. The blades interlock, water runs into channels at the blade ends, then into gutters built into the frame and out through a downpipe. Ask your installer how the system handles heavy storms on your site.

Should I choose a motorised or manual louvre roof?

Motorised is the popular choice. You open the blades with a remote, and you can add a rain sensor that closes them for you. A manual crank costs less and has no motor to service, but you must be home to close it.

What does a rain sensor do on a louvre roof?

It detects rain and tells the motor to close the blades automatically, even when nobody is home. It only works on motorised systems, so budget for both if you want it.

Do you need council approval for an opening roof pergola?

Often, yes. Because the blades can close to form a roof, it may not be treated like an open pergola. Size, height and distance to boundaries also matter, so check with your council before you sign.
